Artist Statement

At heart, I am an interdisciplinary performer, creating masks in multiple mediums.   Wearing a mask to reveal myself is my primary means of locating narratives of my own time and place.   The masks of my identity and the characters I become, dissolving one after another, can awaken identities in the viewer as well as the performer. Performance is a process of continual transformation. It is a way of living.

I use performance to ground conceptual inquiry in the praxis of tangible experiments.   Embodied research explores the boundary between the virtual and the physical, self and other, artist and audience.   The result is works of art in time that live in the interstice between installation, new media, performance and social practices.   I call these works performance environments.

Each pre-set performance environment consists of numerous locations involving a set of overlapping symbolic imagery.   These physical spaces are created to explore a psychological landscape as the viewer/performer moves through installations embedded with potential interactions.   Although each performance environment develops it's own unique aesthetic without adhering to a particular style or medium .   What unifies the work is a methodology of interactivity that may lead participants to perform themselves within an offered situation.

My work uses our culture's obsession with interactive technologies to overcome the passivity and alienation of mediated experience. My presence, physical or implied, is a challenge to take action.   Humor and playful invitations to overcome resistance catalyze active participation.   I step out of the usual self/other relationship to art and performance, I directly engage my audience, inviting them to join me on their own journey and to extend my own experience.   Each person becomes a performer, negotiating personal actions and social interactions, to create his or her own narrative.

The final results of these environments are ephemeral encounters among everyone involved.   Dissolving into a temporary community, I lose myself and find another.   Each meeting is an intimate communion woven together within an ebb and flow of living relationships.
